Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is something that we’re passionate about at FreeWill.

We have a diverse team — 66% of our employees identify as female and 37% of our team identifies as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other people of color). We are fortunate to have had a diverse founding team who put a lot of intention into building a kind and inclusive culture as FreeWill grew.

In 2022, we did our first formal DEI assessment and roadmapping with an outside consultant. In early 2023, we formed a DEI Council that represents a cross-section of our staff and will help us set goals around DEI and drive specific initiatives forward. 

We support organically formed ERG groups, created to support and empower employees who are women, LGBTQ+, Black, LatinX, Asian American or Pacific Islanders, people with disabilities, and/or people of faith.

In the last few years, we’ve taken a number of additional steps to ensure that we remain a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. Some of these steps include:

• Setting up processes to ensure diverse hiring pools and equitable hiring processes
• Sharing best practices on eliminating bias in the hiring process 
• Adjusting policies and processes to be a more inclusive work environment
• Putting a non-negotiation policy into place around pay and introducing pay transparency in our job postings
• Developing a manager training program
• Running trainings on transgender inclusion
• Incorporating DEI into our performance review process

While we have a healthy, inclusive culture, we believe that working toward equity and inclusion is a journey, not a destination or a box that you check, and helping our team build strong DEI muscles requires ongoing work and training.
